How Would You Describe Yourself in the Job Interview?

You are ready for the job interview of that coveted post which you had longed for. However, you are feeling stressful and are unsure of the questions the interviewer is going to hurl at you and most importantly how would you tackle the same with confidence. Well, quite often, the first and one of the inevitable questions is “How do you describe yourself” or “Please describe yourself in few words” Well, this forms the crux of the interview and what you say here will lead to other questions.

Here are some tips to using buzzwords in interview that help you with this question. Follow these tips and modify according to your profession, experience and the position you are applying for.

I am someone who….

‘‘can blend in any situation’’

I can work in both start-ups with daily challenges as well as with established brands with set deadlines. I have worked with experienced people, who are 5-6 years my senior and have learnt from them and at the same time, I have even adapted myself quickly in an environment where half of my colleagues were my junior and undergraduate interns.

‘‘is synonymous with creativity’’

I have a creative bent of mind. My hobbies and interests are varied. Sports, movies and travelling are my favorite extracurricular activities and along with that I read whatever comes my way be that a fashion magazine or a review of a new gadget or the latest of Paulo Coelho. Cooking is also my greatest stress buster and I love to experiment new cuisines from around the world…that is another matter that my family members and my best friend are made a scapegoat. Because of my varied hobbies, I never run short of creative ideas and solutions to difficult problems.

‘‘can plan to achieve higher goals’’

I don’t act on impulse. I have strong strategies for my action to make the project a success. Yes I am emotional but when it comes to work and setting goals, my head rules over my heart. To achieve long term goals one needs to micromanaged work integrity and have a meticulous planning to achieve the goals.

‘‘is an expert in the field’’

‘I am the monarch of all I survey…’if you can convince your interviewer then half of your deed is done. But while doing so ensure that you do not show arrogance. ‘I am humble in what I do but at the same time I am an expert in the chosen field,’ this is what you should portray. If you have experience in the said field your CV will speak for you or else have your knowledge base very strong to support the statement.

‘‘is a patient listener with good interpersonal skills’’

I listen to what my colleagues, my juniors and my seniors have to say. Though it is not possible every time to keep all happy and implement the suggestions, yet I try to imbibe the best from all. I also have good interpersonal skills which is evident that I have friends from 8 to 50 year olds. I can strike a conversation with a stranger and make him or her comfortable.

‘‘is hard-working’’

I do not believe in all work and no play…but yes work is important and nothing else comes in between me and my work. The fact that you pay attention to every minor detail and do not fail to spot the minutest error, will work in your favour.

‘‘have the ability to take the right decision’’

What is the result of having good skills and aptitude if I cannot take the right decision at the right time.’ Delay in taking decision can cost the project. I am good at taking the right decision at the right time.

‘‘is self determined’’

I am a self determined person…I have control over situations. I am confident of my decisions and actions that can make resolution and do not hesitate to shoulder responsibility.

‘‘can work independently as well as in a group’’

I am lovely to work with people in group projects because I strongly feel that I alone cannot achieve the best. I would need full support of all other members to make the project a super successful one. However, I can do my own work independently without being micromanaged.

‘‘is not a clone of someone else’’

Last but not the least, I am not a clone and I do not wish to be one. I am myself with my own attributes and qualities. I have the ability to make my weaknesses my strengths.

All said and done, it is important that you do your homework well before any interview and go right inside with confidence and zeal.
